The Polar Citizen Science Collective trains expedition staff members to lead citizen science projects with their guests while traveling to polar regions. For several years, I've worked with the Polar Collective to organize bird surveys from ships traveling through the Southern Ocean. Participants report their data to eBird using standard methods and protocols, but they also collect some extra metadata to help us model the detection of birds.
If you are an expedition staff member and would like to participate, ask your company whether they are a Polar Collective partner. If so, you'll have access to the online training module (which has many useful resources for engaging guests). If your company is not a partner, you can still participate—simply contact me for details. If you will be traveling aboard an Antarctic expedition ship as a guest, and you are an eBird user, you're also welcome to collect data for the project. Please reach out and I'd be happy to give you any information you need. |
